Social responsibility Did you know that since , Biblio has used its profits to build 12 public libraries in rural villages of South America? I hope that the next edition will take care of these concerns, and it will become the 5-star product it should have been - with better attention to correcting errors, and a consistent excellence that doesn't taper off in the later half.
In conclusion, I recomend buying this product - but be careful of the above concerns, and supplement with other materials so as to avoid missing out on learning common usages of the characters you are learning to write, and avoid being lead astray by the errors. By K M on Jan 10, I am very happy I purchased this book. The definitions are brief and to-the-point.

The authors offer suggestions about how to remember the words, providing context which will help you remember the characters. For example, the word for "dust" is made up of two sub-characters, the word for "rice" and the word for "divide," both which were defined earlier. In fact, both the words "rice" and "divide" are also made up of sub-characters which were taught earlier. In other words, the authors divide words into manageable components which make them easier to learn, write, and remember. I only have two criticisms, both which are far outweighed by the benefits hence my decision to give this book 5 stars.
While the book gives examples of how the words are used, some of these phrases would not be used in spoken Chinese. While the authors often point out that some words "bookish," they don't qualify some other phrases which would never be used in conversation or as a matter of fact, that would not be used often in literature. Additionally, while the simplified characters are depicted, the brush strokes are not, though that is a minor point considering that the main objective of the text is to teach the traditional characters. This book would be extremely helpful for self-learners who have grown up speaking Chinese but who are unable to write it but you should know how to read pinyin.
On the other hand, it would not be the best book for self-learners who are unable to speak the language because there is no audio portion, and you would have a lot of trouble learning how to pronounce the words one of the biggest problems for Chinese learners. This would certainly work well as a supplementary text in a classroom. This book resulted to be great I searched on different books before going for this By Mark Moscosa on Jan 15, For this topic there are tons of books aiming to explain every character, and its composition.
This book resulted to be great I searched on different books before going for this one, I entirely recommend this book. If you want even more detail, I would suggest getting Fun with Chinese Characters as it makes thorough explanations and even provides short cartoons for helping you associate thoughts. By Backbutton on Nov 07, I speak Chinese but do not read or write, and had been looking for a good book for such learning.

Got a reference to this book as the best for "Waiguoren. Furthermore, it adheres to Chinese way of teaching Chinese, beginning with strokes and PinYin. What would make this book more perfect would be if it were available in digital edition so I can carry it around in my Kindle and iPad for constant practice.
Although the book is small and practical to carry, if digital as well, it could be a constant companion--for what is needed in learning Chinese is constant review, as learning Chinese is an exercise in memorization. If digital, it would be one less thing to carry around. I carried the book around with a pad and studied on the train. By Gopher 1 on Jun 27, Book arrived in about 5 days with free shipping. Book was new and published in Japan. Smaller than the current book we have at home.
Quality of the paper was not as good as the copy we have at home. The paper was not stark white as our existing copy. Paper was the color of newspaper print. Since the page is smaller, the font is smaller as well. Otherwise book is identical. By Steve on Apr 12, This book advertises itself as "a comprehensive guide" but is really more of a dictionary.
To that end, it is fairly useful because it is relatively small and easy to use. I agree with a previous reviewer that "Chinese Characters: A Genealogy and Dictionary" is superior, but the text in the McNaughton and Li is larger and I find this book to be easier for quick reference.
Reading and Writing Chinese: A Guide to the Chinese Writing System
Still, if you already own "Chinese Characters: A Genealogy and Dictionary" or another dictionary you are satisfied with, this book might not be worth your time and money.
